WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers say a hiker who tried to avoid an icy trail in steep mountain terrain got lost in the woods in plunging temperatures and needed help.

Officers say 26-year-old Jennifer Mehling, of Westampton, New Jersey, didn’t have additional clothing or an adequate light source as temperatures dipped into the 20s at Mount Welch. She had decided to clear a path through the woods in an effort to avoid the ice, but didn’t have a map.

After she called 911, an officer found her at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, over four hours after she had left the trail head about 1 ½ miles away.

They returned to the trail head at 8 p.m.
