HANOVER, N.H. (AP) - Dartmouth College is estimating $27 million in its latest financial statement for future cleanup costs at a site where the school once dumped animals used in science experiments.
The Valley News reports administrators added the money in anticipation of future costs to remediate environmental contamination around Rennie Farm, the former lab waste site.
The financial statement says about $5 million of the $27 million comes from actual costs incurred during the 2017 fiscal year. Dartmouth had installed a “pump-and-treat” system on the roughly 200-acre wooded hillside where its medical school buried carcasses and lab chemicals half a century ago.
The network of pumps is designed to siphon off and treat groundwater contaminated with a chemical solvent component that started leaking after a 2011 excavation.
