OPINION:
Too many Republicans excel at joining with Democrats on killing legislation and other critical issues. The Republicans, with a House and Senate majority, have an unprecedented opportunity to pass good, much-needed tax-reform legislation, with a transition period and provision for prompt revision if significant problems occur.
House and Senate leaders said they were working closely with the White House on the tax bill. Yet House and Senate Republicans have two competing bills. They should know that passing a perfect bill is impossible. Several senators are threatening to vote no and kill the bill.
Republicans joined Democrats in criticizing President Donald Trump based on the so-called “dossier,” the claims of which we now know were false. We also now know the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign paid for the document’s production.
In the House hearing, some Republicans criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions for not appointing a special counsel to investigate the Clinton-led deal that gave Russia control of 20 percent of our uranium. It would be wrong for Mr. Sessions to appoint a special counsel if the request had been made by either Mr. Trump or House Republicans. Mr. Sessions was right on. He will follow the law and the facts and retain his independence.
