NEW YORK (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a woman found by firefighters responding to a fire in the stairwell of a Manhattan housing complex.
The fire was reported at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in the ninth floor stairwell at the Dewitt Clinton Houses on East 105th Street in East Harlem.
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Shantee Nakhid, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believe the woman was killed in another part of the complex and her body was dragged into the stairwell where it was set on fire.
Police say a suspect was later hospitalized after he was found in a 12th floor apartment with self-inflicted cuts in an apparent suicide attempt.
Police did not give a motive for the killing.
