SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials say an inmate has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis.
The Department of Correction said in a statement Tuesday that an inmate serving a 20-year sentence at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center has been diagnosed with the disease that typically attacks the lungs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says TB bacteria are spread through the air from one person to another. Officials say the inmate is being treated at a local hospital.
The department says staffers and others who may have been in contact with the inmate have been identified and necessary follow-up care will be provided. It will work with the Division of Public Health on this issue.
