HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A fire that may have started in a light fixture caused at least $250,000 in damage at a Helena middle school and led administrators to cancel classes.
The fire at C.R. Anderson Middle School started at about 3 p.m. Monday. No students were there because it was an early release day and staff members were evacuated safely.
Superintendent Jack Copps says much of the water damage was in the cafeteria and gymnasium.
Classes were canceled on Tuesday and after initial plans to reopen on Wednesday, school officials said they need to test for lead. If it is found students could be out of class for a few more days for cleanup.
Copps says officials also are waiting to see if the water will cause the tile flooring to lift up. If it does, the school will have to remove asbestos.
