ACTON, Maine (AP) - Police say two Maine women were bitten as they tried to stop a pit bull from attacking and killing another dog.

York County Sheriff William King says the dog is quarantined as animal control officers investigate.

He said the pit bull was recently rescued. The owner brought it with her to visit a friend in Acton on Sunday.

King says the pit bull attacked the friend’s dog, a 27-pound 12-year-old mixed breed named Kramer.

Both women tried to intervene and were bitten. They were treated at a hospital and released. Kramer died of his injuries.

King said the women did not want to release their names.
