PHOENIX (AP) - Fire officials say a brushfire erupted southeast of Tucson Saturday afternoon and grew to 500 acres by nightfall.
Almost 200 firefighters battled the blaze in brush and grass on private and federal land and reached 45 percent containment by evening. Some homes were threatened by the flames and sheriff’s deputies were helping with evacuations.
The cause of the blaze is undetermined.
The Red Cross of Southern Arizona has set up an evacuation shelter at the Pima County Fairgrounds.
