MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says bird-watching opportunities abound at the state’s 90 wildlife management areas.
The areas are managed for wildlife habitat and wildlife-based recreated such as birdwatching, hunting and fishing.
Biologist Paul Hamelin, who coordinates habitat management at the areas, says all offer opportunities, but the best include the Dead Creek area in Addison where more than 200 species of ducks, songbirds and hawks can be found. Thousands of snow geese touch down at Dead Creek in the spring and fall as part of their annual migration.
On the other side of the state, Hamelin recommends the Wenlock area in Ferdinand, which has bogs and boreal forests. There birders can spot the Canada jay, boreal chickadee, black-backed woodpecker, and state-endangered spruce grouse.
