WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) - Authorities in Los Angeles County say a man who lost consciousness after being restrained by officers later died at a hospital.

Sheriff’s Deputy Caroline Rodriguez says officers responded to a home in Whittier Thursday following reports of a man suffering from a mental illness who was refusing to go to a mental hospital.

The man had run away from the home by the time police arrived but was followed by a family member.

Rodriguez says when officers caught up with the man, he tried to jump over a fence.

She says as officers restrained and handcuffed the man, he passed out. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

An autopsy is planned. The incident is under investigation.
