Glance: Legislature-approved Arizona budget by the numbers

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is expected to sign a $9.8 billion spending package for the budget year beginning July 1 passed by the Legislature Friday. Here’s a look at the new spending items, plus numbers in top spending categories:

SELECTED NEW SPENDING/CUTS

K-12 EDUCATON

$34 million for 1 percent teacher raise this year

$37 million to reward high-performing schools

$8 million to add all day kindergarten or early literacy programs in poor schools

$63 million for six new schools

SOCIAL SERVICES:

$33 million to disability and long-term care providers to offset minimum wage increase

COUNTIES/CITIES

$30 million in local road money

Takes $1.6 million for gang and immigration enforcement in Maricopa County, transfers to Pima County and to process rape kit backlog statewide

PLANNED PARENTHOOD:

Requires state to apply to oversee federal family planning funds, bars Planned Parenthood from program

UNIVERSITIES

$27 million a year starting next year to allow state universities borrow up to $1 billion for new construction and maintenance

$15 million this year for operations, with $2 million earmarked for conservative “freedom Schools” at ASU and UofA.

SPENDING BREAKDOWN, GENERAL FUND ONLY, BY TOP SIX CATEGORIES

K-12 EDUCATION:

The budget includes spending of $4.2 billion, up from $4.1 billion in the current budget.

MEDICAID:

Increased by $24 million to $1.8 billion, including adding $1.5 million for emergency dental care for all 1.9 million insured residents.

PRISONS:

Spending is essentially flat at $1.05 billion.

STATE UNIVERSITIES:

Spending remains the same at nearly $700 million.

SOCIAL SERVICES:

The state’s social services agency gets a 7 percent increase, the biggest percentage boost of all categories, to $585 million.

CHILD SAFETY:

Spending on the state’s child safety agency is steady at $379 million.
