The Salt Line (79 Potomac Ave. SE), an oyster and ale house, opens Thursday. The restaurant specializes in New England-inspired dishes under the direction of executive chef Kyle Bailey. The menu will feature the day’s catch — often underutilized species of fish — purchased from individual fishermen in the Chesapeake Bay region.

Friday is National Doughnut Day, started by the Salvation Army in Chicago to honor its members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken (1308 G St. NW) will celebrate the occasion with a cherry pie doughnut made with cherry compote filling, tart cherry vanilla glaze and shortbread cookie crumbles for $3.50. All of the cherry pie doughnuts sold Friday will benefit the Fisher House Foundation.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Red’s Table (11150 South Lakes Dr., Reston, Virginia) will host a tasting dinner showcasing lesser-known light red wines. The wines will complement a seasonal four-course dinner created by newly appointed executive chef Kevin Ettenson. Tickets are priced at $85 per person.



Beginning June 10 on Global Wellness Day, Bourbon Steak in the Four Seasons Hotel (2800 Pennsylvania Ave. NW) will go green with a healthy version of its leftover “doggie bag” service. During the weeklong celebration, diners can opt to have any meat remaining on their plates transformed into a healthy salad on a bed of mesclun, radishes, cucumbers and strawberries, with a side of sherry vinaigrette.

All Set Restaurant & Bar (8630 Fenton St., Silver Spring, Maryland) will celebrate Father’s Day (June 18) with a special “Dads Eat Free” offer. Dads will receive a complimentary entree with the purchase of an additional entree of equal or greater value.

Summer in the city is enhanced by Hula Girl Bar and Grill (4044 Campbell Ave., Arlington, Virginia) with its Hawaiian Happy Hour, taking place every day from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Various beers, wines and tropical drinks, including a concoction of coconut rum and tropical juices, are available at special prices, along with an array of dishes. Fridays are “Get Lei’d Aloha Fridays,” with Hawaiian leis for all.

And speaking of summer, Washington-area restaurants have opened their outdoor patios and rooftops for the season. Here is a sampling:

Lupo Verde (1401 T St. NW) has a 40-seat gated outdoor patio for enjoying Italian specialties. At Blue Duck Tavern (1201 24th St. NW), the 42-seat garden terrace invites guests to enjoy al fresco breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar (801 Ninth St. NW) offers Cuban-inspired dishes on the 64-seat sidewalk cafe.

In Penn Quarter, 701 Restaurant (701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW) has a 40-seat outdoor patio where guests can view the Navy Memorial fountain and the National Archives. Wines by the glass and specialty cocktails priced at $7 during happy hour are available Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the patio and in 701’s bar/lounge. In Cleveland Park’s Ardeo + Bardeo (3311 Connecticut Ave. NW), modern American cuisine is served at dinner and Saturday and Sunday brunch is served on the 24-seat rooftop patio.

Rasika West End (1190 New Hampshire Ave. NW) offers a 40-seat patio for enjoying modern authentic Indian dishes for lunch and dinner, while The Bombay Club (815 Connecticut Ave. NW), a stone’s throw from the White House, serves elegant traditional Indian dishes on its 30-seat outdoor patio. Across the street, The Oval Room (800 Connecticut Ave. NW) provides 40 seats on its patio.

TAKODA Restaurant & Beer Garden (715 Florida Ave. NW) features a year-round, 71-seat roof deck with a 270-degree view of Shaw, U Street and LeDroit Park. In Georgetown, The Grill Room (1050 31st St. NW) provides a 16-seat outdoor patio overlooking the historic C&O Canal. Sakerum (2204 14th St. NW) serves Latin and Asian dishes on an enclosed rooftop.

Espita Mezcaleria (1250 Ninth St. NW) offers diners a covered 38-seat mescal garden where more than 120 mescals are available in 1- or 2-ounce pours, a 6-ounce carafe to share, or as a flight. Le DeSales (1725 DeSales St. NW), across the street from the Mayflower Hotel, opened its 18-seat sidewalk cafe in mid-April.

BABA (2901 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Virginia), Ambar’s sister restaurant, is offering a four-plate dinner special, available from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Thursday, until June 29. This special offer is priced at $29.99 per person and includes a choice of one dish each from the vegetarian, seafood, meat and dessert dinner menu, which showcases Balkan cuisine.

Rooftop Bar & Lounge at the Rosewood Hotel (1050 31st St. NW), Tredici Enoteca at the St. Gregory Hotel (2033 M St. NW) and Red’s Table are observing June as National Rose Month with rose specials for the summer months, with glasses ranging from $8 to $26 and bottles from $31 to $45.
