NEW YORK (AP) - The lawyer for a New Jersey police officer charged in a drunken driving crash that killed a fellow Linden police officer and another man two years ago says his client wasn’t drunk.
During summations Wednesday, Pedro Abad’s lawyer called the crash a tragedy and a horrific accident that was “not caused by intoxication.”
But prosecutors say Pedro Abad drank to “obliteration” at a Staten Island strip club before his vehicle collided head-on into a tractor-trailer. They say Abad had a blood-alcohol level three-times the legal limit.
The Staten Island Advance (https://bit.ly/2pyCZs8) reports that defense lawyer Mario Gallucci questioned the numbers, saying Abad had lost so much blood that transfusions had contaminated the blood alcohol content reading.
The 29-year-old Abad has pleaded not guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and manslaughter.
