TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The Pima County Board of Commissioners has voted in favor of banning cellphones while driving unless a hands-free option is being used.
The board voted for the ordinance on Tuesday and it is set to go into effect June 1.
Exceptions to the ordinance include using phones for emergencies, or use by law enforcement officers and school bus drivers.
The fine is $100 for using a cellphone without a hands-free option.
Texting while driving already had been illegal in the county, but could only be cited if the driver was pulled over for a primary violation.
Gov. Doug Ducey last week signed a texting law prohibiting teenagers from using hand-held devices for six months after getting their driver’s license.
