LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Southern California disc jockey credited with helping introduce the Runaways, the Bangles and Duran Duran to American audiences is losing his job.
The Orange County Register (https://bit.ly/2s215KP ) says Rodney Bingenheimer is ending 41 years at KROQ (Kaye-rock) /106.7 FM. His last broadcast will be midnight to 3 a.m. on June 5.
The Los Angeles station said Friday it will be “forever grateful” for his contribution.
Bingenheimer joined KROQ in 1976. He introduced or helped promote everyone from the Go-Gos and X to Blondie and Cheap Trick.
DJ Chris Carter says he probably “made more bands famous than any other DJ in America.”
Carter produced a documentary featuring Bingenheimer, “Mayor of the Sunset Strip.”
Bingenheimer, who’s 69, says he’s already considering finding a new home for his show.
