COACHELLA, Calif. (AP) - The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department says a deputy struck by gunfire while pursuing a suspect in Coachella suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The department says the deputy was shot Thursday night during a foot pursuit of a driver who initially refused to comply with a traffic enforcement stop, threw a gun out and then ran from the vehicle while armed with a handgun.

The deputy called for help and was flown to a hospital.

The search for the gunman is continuing Friday. The Sheriff’s Department says he’s a 27-year-old suspected gang member and is believed to be armed and dangerous.
