JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Jackson-area nurse has been arrested after authorities say he embezzled drugs.

Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director John Dowdy tells local media that 32-year-old Jeremy David Duke was arrested Wednesday on embezzlement charges. Duke is suspected of diverting the Schedule II substances Dilaudid and morphine, both powerful opioids.

Duke worked as a registered nurse at a Jackson-area hospital that hasn’t been identified. He has surrendered his nursing license.

Dowdy says the investigation is ongoing and further charges are possible.

It’s unclear if Duke has an attorney.

Dowdy says the MBN and DEA have been cracking down on opioid abuse across the state. Last week, two doctors surrendered their DEA licenses and two nurse practitioners were arrested for pharmaceutical diversion.
