RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina motorists are being alerted to construction on Interstate 85 that could impact their Memorial Day weekend travel.

The N.C. Department of Transportation says a major construction project between Vance County and the Virginia state line means southbound traffic is shifted to the inside lane on the northbound side, creating a two-way pattern between the beginning of the project in Henderson to near Norlina.

Northbound and southbound traffic is currently in a single lane from near Norlina to the state line. Southbound traffic in the area is being shifted to the inside lane on the northbound side in June.

The shifts are part of a five-year project to repair the deteriorating highway, replace bridges on I-85 and improve bridges over the interstate to create safer conditions for tractor trailers.
