MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. (AP) - A new report by the Disability Law Center of Virginia shows several patients at the Central Virginia Training Center have died of complications from urinary tract infections.

Media outlets report that the watchdog organization released a report Monday outlining six deaths between March 2015 and May 2016. The names of the patients who died were blacked out.

Virginia’s training centers house people with severe disabilities.

UTIs are often caused by bacteria entering through the urethra and building up in the bladder. According to the Mayo Clinic, UTIs rarely result in complications, but they can result in sepsis, which is life-threatening.

The CVTC directed all questions to the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. Department commissioner Jack Barber says the CVTC has taken “a number of steps to reduce and prevent the number of UTIs.”
