OPINION:
Rebecca Hagelin’s “Peace through diversity?” op-ed (Web, May 21) article requires a response. I’m just a visitor here in Maryland and happened to read Ms. Hagelin’s piece. Though not an expert, I had to wonder about the wisdom of her conclusions. She lumps diversity and global warming together as absurd world views that result in “ridiculous and dangerous military strategy.”
While her view of diversity may deserve latitude, the threat of global warming and the related rising of sea levels is very serious and will cost us billions of dollars, according to all the reports I have read. Yet it’s plain to see that the Pentagon’s military experts disagree with the conclusion that “the greatest threat facing our military is global warming.” There’s too much at risk to allow such a baseless exaggeration to go unanswered.
It seems to me that any writer getting newsprint space should be properly researching her material before being published.
