PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence City Council has voted unanimously to withdraw a proposal to change its rules allowing for the removal of its president.

The proposal would have allowed the council to remove its president by a two-thirds majority vote. Acting President Sabina Matos says the Rules Committee will meet instead to review the council rule book.

Former President Luis Aponte was charged earlier this month with embezzlement and misusing campaign funds. The Democrat has pleaded not guilty.

A majority of councilors boycotted a meeting last week because Aponte refused to step down. Members then announced the proposal to change its rules.

Aponte resigned from the position Friday, but he is still a member of the council. Matos says she does not expect a vote this week for a permanent president.
