ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a young child who fell out of a third-story window at his home apparently escaped serious injury because an awning broke his fall.

The accident occurred around 8 p.m. Friday at a home on Ripley Place in Elizabeth.

Witnesses said the 3-year-old boy tumbled out of the window and hit the awning before he fell on to the sidewalk. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The child’s name has not been released.

Authorities say the accident remains under investigation.
