NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina police officer has been hurt in a wreck involving a sheriff’s deputy following a chase

Authorities say a North Charleston police officer was taken to a hospital after his cruiser collided with a Charleston County sheriff’s deputy’s car early Tuesday.

The officers were responding to help another sheriff’s deputy who had chased a motorist who sped away from a traffic stop around 3:30 a.m.

Sheriff’s Lt. Rita Zelinsky told local media outlets the officer’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

The person who fled the traffic stop crashed into a fence and was arrested. Deputies found a damaged safe, crowbar and gloves in the suspect’s vehicle.

The names of those involved have not been released.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating both wrecks.
