EAST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty police officer fatally shot a man after he saw him shoot and wound another person.

Essex County prosecutors say the shooting occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday in East Orange.

They say a preliminary investigation found the Jersey City officer saw Samir Nicholson shoot another man. The officer then shot Nicholson, a 24-year-old East Orange resident who was pronounced dead a short time later.

The officer wasn’t injured and his name hasn’t been released. Jersey City officials have said he remains on active duty.

The man Nicholson shot was treated at a hospital for undisclosed injuries. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for that shooting or released the victim’s name.

The shooting remains under review by the prosecutor’s office, which is standard procedure following police-involved shootings.
