LYNDON, Vt. (AP) - The interim president of Lyndon State College is stepping into a new role as provost after Lyndon State and Johnson State College merge in 2018.

The Caledonian Record (https://bit.ly/2qoNS0S ) reports Nolan Atkins is serving as provost for both schools starting in July. He will continue to serve as provost after the schools become a unified Northern Vermont University next year.

The merger of the two schools was approved unanimously last year to offset losses in $1 million each due to declining student enrollment and increasing deficits.

President of Johnson State College, Elaine Collins, will become president of both schools during the transition year. She will also hold her position when the schools unify.

In a statement, Collins says she has “no doubt he (Atkins) will thrive as provost.”
