BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (AP) - A Department of Energy laboratory has been allocated $15 million by the state of New York for a new microscope - capable of studying objects and life-forms in extremely cold temperatures.
The Brookhaven National Laboratory will use this new cryo-electron microscope in collaboration with two other Long Island scientific institutions: Stony Brook University and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
Brookhaven officials tell Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/2qxNvQQ ) that the new center, the Long Island Facility for Electron Microscopy, will be focused on improving how scientists study molecular structures and underlying causes of a number of medical conditions.
Cryo-electron microscopes are a type of electron microscope that allows researchers to study samples at a cryogenic temperature, around minus 321 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 196 degrees Celsius).
