WASHINGTON (AP) - A 6-year-old boy was struck and killed while crossing a street on his birthday in southeast Washington D.C.

Media outlets report that Xavier Luckey was hit by a car Wednesday night. The boy allegedly had been walking to a park where his family was hosting a cookout for his birthday.

Luckey was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses say that after the boy was hit, the driver sped away and was briefly chased by relatives and bystanders.

Washington police say the driver went to a police station in Prince George’s County and told them about the crash. Authorities interviewed the driver. No charges had been filed, but the case remains under investigation.
