Final phase of nearly $20M Galveston beach expansion done

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Park officials say crews have finished transferring 1.2 million cubic yards of dredged sand to widen a 4-mile stretch of beach in Galveston.

Ceremonies were held Thursday to mark completion of the nearly $20 million project to widen the beach by about 150 feet, between 10th and 61st streets. Sand was dredged from the Galveston Ship Channel.

Land Commissioner George P. Bush, who was on hand for the celebration, said it’s the largest beach nourishment project ever accomplished in Texas.

State, federal and Galveston funds paid for the three-part expansion. The first two phases were completed in 2015.
