JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Alcorn State University will add a $15-a-semester activities fee to student bills.
The College Board approved the plan on Thursday.
The change means the total cost for two full-time semesters of tuition and fees at Alcorn will rise by 5.5 percent to $6,908 beginning this fall. Students are paying $6,546 this year. Trustees approved tuition increases in April, citing state budget cuts.
Students won’t pay the fee during summer terms.
The 3,700-student university says the new fee will add $94,000 to spending for entertainment, speakers and student groups. A student referendum approved the plan and a student board will oversee spending.
Alcorn is the last of the Mississippi’s eight public universities to add a fee on top of regular tuition charges after trustees began permitting such fees several years ago.
