HONOLULU (AP) - Three more mumps infections have been reported, bringing this year’s total confirmed cases in Hawaii to 30 as of Friday.
Officials say the latest reports are from the Job Corps Center in Waimanalo. Health officials are notifying those who came into with the individuals involved. They will keep an eye on program participants and staff to identify, control or prevent additional cases.
Previous reports came from Kaimuki, Waipahu, Kalihi and Waianae.
Mumps is contagious disease caused by a virus. It can be spread through sneezing and coughing or using contaminated objects. Mumps can cause fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite in those infected.
Health department officials have said that a majority of the cases involve minors.
In 2001, 42 mumps cases were confirmed.
