NEW YORK (AP) - Firefighters battled a heavy fire at a shuttered synagogue in lower Manhattan that sent smoke billowing across the skyline.
The 3-alarm blaze broke out at about 7 p.m. Sunday at 60 Norfolk St. The fire was brought under control a little less than three hours later. There were no reports of any injuries.
The Gothic structure was originally built in 1850 as a Baptist church. It later served as synagogue for the Beth Hamedrash Hagodol Orthodox Jewish congregation for over 120 years ago. The synagogue was closed in 2007.
