Rep. Elijah Cummings said Friday that the most important person in the firing of former FBI Director James B. Comey is Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
“Right now, in this moment, the key person in all of this is Rod Rosenstein, the deputy,” Mr. Cummings said on CNN.
The Maryland Democrat said he has sent a letter to Mr. Rosenstein asking him to look into Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ role in the firing of Mr. Comey. Mr Cummings said that if the firing does have something to do with the Russia case, then Mr. Sessions should have had no role in the matter. Mr. Sessions also recommended Mr. Comey’s removal along with Mr. Rosenstein.
“This morning, I sent a letter to the deputy attorney general, Mr. Rosenstein, asking him to look into the issue of whether we need a special prosecutor and whether there has been a true adherence to the recusal Secretary Sessions said that he was going to do with regard to the Hillary Clinton matters and with regard to President Trump and the Russian matters,” Mr. Cummings said.
The congressman said that the president already made up his mind about firing Mr. Comey and that Mr. Rosenstein’s letter was not the cause of the termination.
“[Mr. Rosenstein] is a man of integrity. When I heard this about him, I said this doesn’t add up. This is not the Rosenstein I know,” Mr. Cummings said.
