TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man who died protecting a pregnant waitress being attacked by a mentally ill man has been posthumously awarded a Carnegie Medal for heroism.
George Heath was honored by the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission on Wednesday. He’s one of 20 people across the county receiving the award.
The commission investigates stories of heroism and awards medals and cash several times a year.
Authorities said the 56-year-old teacher was dining at a Bertucci’s restaurant at a mall in Taunton when Arthur DaRosa walked in and stabbed a waitress last May. They said DaRosa had fatally stabbed an 80-year-old woman at her home earlier that night.
Authorities said Heath grabbed DaRosa and was stabbed in the head before another restaurant patron- an off-duty sheriff -fatally shot DaRosa.
