SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A 46-year-old Eastern black rhino named Elly has died at the San Francisco Zoo.

KPIX-TV reports (https://cbsloc.al/2qSOLz2 ) the endangered rhino had been put under anesthesia last week for an exploratory surgery to examine one of her legs. The veterinarian team then determined Elly’s condition had deteriorated and she could no longer be treated while still living a happy life.

Elly had given birth to 14 calves. She has 15 grand calves, six great-grand calves and one great-great-grand calf.

She had been the oldest black rhino in the country.

It is estimated only between 5,042 and 5,455 of the critically endangered black rhinos are left in the wild.
