PHOENIX (AP) - Some people who stopped to help a motorcyclist hurt in a crash on a Phoenix freeway got hit by another car Monday, killing the biker and one good Samaritan and seriously injuring two others, authorities said.

An SUV plowed into the initial wreck on southbound Interstate 17 after three vehicles pulled over to help, state Department of Public Safety Trooper Kameron Lee said. The SUV landed partially on top of a mangled red car in the right-hand lane as the motorcycle lay on the pavement next to the car.

Three men and a woman were helping the motorcyclist, who was alert and conscious before the fatal crash, Lee said. The woman and motorcyclist were killed, and two of the men were seriously injured, he said. The other man was not hurt.

“They’re on the scene rendering aid,” Lee said of the good Samaritans. “They were helping him, talking to him.”

Investigators said the SUV driver was not impaired by alcohol or drugs, and they were investigating whether distraction or something else caused the wreck.

It wasn’t immediately known what led to the motorcyclist’s initial crash, Lee said.

No identities were released.

The freeway was closed for about five hours during the beginning of the morning commute.
