NEW YORK (AP) - Police are investigating after two Staten Island high school students were caught bringing loaded handguns to school.

It happened at Curtis High School on Hamilton Street on Monday.

Police say a 16-year-old was caught with 22-caliber weapon and an 18-year-old was stopped with a 40-caliber weapon. Both firearms were loaded and were found in the student’s book bags.

Charges are pending against the students.

WABC TV says another student had apparently informed administrators, who found the guns.

The city’s department of education released a statement saying the “safety of students always comes first” and the “troubling incident was swiftly addressed.”
