MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a brush fire that closed a highway on the Phoenix metro area’s eastern outskirts for several days last week is expected to be fully contained Monday as more firefighters are being released to their regular duties.
Tonto National Forest officials say the perimeter of the fire that burned about a square mile of brush along the Salt River bottom about four miles northeast of Mesa was 85 percent contained as of late Sunday night, when only 25 firefighters remained assigned to mop-up duty.
The Bush Highway reopened Friday after being closed earlier in week.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
