TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A cellphone consultant for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement faces grand theft and organized scheme to defraud charges after investigators say he used the agency’s account to purchase mobile devices for himself and his family.
FDLE spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger said in a news release Thursday that the agency investigated John Leland Goelz after an employee had trouble getting a phone upgrade. They agency’s contract includes a certain number of mobile device upgrades at discounted rates each year.
The investigation revealed that Goelz purchased 10 cellphones that should have been used to upgrade FDLE phones. The contract allows for deep discounts resulting in a $5,000 loss to the agency.
Plessinger says Goelz was arrested Tuesday night and in the process of being fired from FDLE. Records don’t list an attorney.
