PHOENIX (AP) - Crews working to clean out a major wash through Tucson pulled out 80 tons of scrap metal along with 240 tons of concrete since October.

The crews discovered the debris while working in the Pantano Wash. Tucson News Now reports (https://bit.ly/2n09sra ) workers also removed 10 tons of tires and 2,400 tons of plant material, as well as parts of cars from the 1950s and 60s. The crews removed the plant material and turned it into mulch.

Pima County officials have said they are trying to recycle or reuse much of the material found. They believe wreckage has been illegally dumped in the wash for decades.

The Pima County Flood Control District said the bank protection project started in October.
