ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Anne Arundel County Public School system has canceled professional development to make more substitute teachers available to cover for teachers taking off for a national women’s strike.

Some women in the U.S. are staying home from work, joining rallies or wearing red to demonstrate their economic clout as part of a protest called A Day Without a Woman.

The Capital reports (https://bit.ly/2mCexVx ) Anne Arundel schools communications officer Bob Mosier sent an email Tuesday night telling teachers to go Wednesday to their regular classes, instead of the planned training, due to “an unexpected increase in requested leave.”

System spokeswoman Maneka Monk told the newspaper that school officials saw requests for leave rise throughout Tuesday. School officials did not immediately have available the number of teachers requesting Wednesday off.
