LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say deputies fatally shot a man who attacked them after he was hit with a stun gun while acting erratically and threatening people at a gym.

Deputy Kimberly Alexander says the shooting occurred late Tuesday outside a 24 Hour Fitness in the Ladera Heights area.

Alexander says deputies responded twice within several hours to reports of a man creating a disturbance. Officials say the second time deputies arrived, the suspect ran around a parking lot and a stun gun was used on him.

The suspect then retrieved some type of device hanging from a string or cord and struck deputies with it. When the stun gun failed to subdue the man, a deputy opened fire.

The suspect was struck several times and died at a hospital. His name was not released.
