TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Crews say they’ve discovered 80 tons of scrap metal in Tucson’s Pantano Wash including auto parts from the 1950s and 1960s.
KOLD-TV reports crews have been working on bank protection in the wash to help protect the hundreds of homes and businesses near the waterway.
Pima County Flood Control District says the project began in October 2016.
The crews had to dig between 8 to 10 feet deep and they’re using that dirt to make soil cement.
Also discovered so far are 10 tons of tires, 240 tons of concrete and 2,400 tons of plant material.
County officials say they’re trying to recycle or reuse much of the material found in the wash.
They believe the wash has been the site for illegal dumping for decades.
