JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Plans to merge Chickasaw County’s three school districts and study consolidation of Perry County’s two districts are headed back to the state Senate.

House members Tuesday passed both bills.

Senate Bill 2461 , as amended in the House, would merge the Chickasaw County, Houston and Okolona school districts. The Senate had earlier proposed only merging Houston and Chickasaw County, leaving Okolona independent.

Okolona has threatened to ask the U.S. Justice Department to block any merger based on Okolona’s desegregation order. All three districts oppose consolidation.

An amended version of Senate Bill 2463 would appoint a study committee to study a merger of the Richton and Perry County districts. The Senate had originally proposed to merge the districts without a study committee.
