CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - A woman who prepared bogus income tax returns for clients of a tax preparation company she operated is now headed to prison.
Federal prosecutors say Noemi Pender received a one-year sentence on Tuesday. The 58-year-old Rosenhayn resident had pleaded guilty last month to a conspiracy charge.
Prosecutors say Pender and 64-year-old Grace Garrett, of Pittsgrove, prepared and filed income tax returns for the tax years 2007 through 2011 that were based on false information. Prosecutors say the pair’s motive was to increase referrals, enhance their business and enrich themselves.
The bogus returns resulted in a tax loss to the government of more than $340,000.
Garrett pleaded guilty to her role in the scheme last May. She’s due to be sentenced later this month.
