The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that Maryland point guard Melo Trimble was named a first team All Big-Ten selection for the third time by both the coaches and the media.
Trimble led the Terrapins in scoring and was sixth in the conference with 16.9 points per game. Trimble also averages 3.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and just over a steal per game.
The Upper Marlboro native has 29 double-figure scoring performances this season, including a current streak of 20 straight.
This is Trimble’s third career All-Big Ten selection after being selected in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. He is the 15th player in Maryland history to earn all-conference selections three times, and the first since Greivis Vazquez from 2008-10. He is second in school history in career made free throws.
Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan was the only other unanimous pick on the team, as the Boilermaker big man was named the Big Ten Player of the Year. Minnesota’s Richard Pitino was selected as the Coach of the Year.
Maryland enters this week’s Big Ten Tournament at the Verizon Center as the third seed following Trimble’s game-winning shot against Michigan State on Saturday. At 12-6 in the Big Ten and 24-7 overall, the Terrapins received a double-bye into Friday night’s 9 p.m. quarterfinal and will play the winner of No. 6 Northwestern vs. Ohio State/Rutgers game.
