The world gave Hugh Jackman’s “Logan” a profitable send-off over the weekend with an impressive $247.3 million global haul for its opening weekend.
Moviegoers have watched Hugh Jackman play the iconic mutant “Wolverine” for 17 years, but “Logan” may end up being his most popular and critically acclaimed take on the hero to date. The film, said to be his last in the role, scored a 92 percent “fresh” rating with critics on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes on its way to $88.3 million in domestic sales.
“Logan” was the second superhero-inspired pairing of Mr. Jackman with director James Mangold of 2013’s “The Wolverine.”
“Jim and Hugh perfectly executed the movie they wanted to make,” Chris Aronson, domestic distribution president for Fox, told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. “It is a very personal and visceral story for the character, which contemplates mortality.”
The 20th Century Fox project, which also stars Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen and Stephen Merchant, also secured the largest March opening for an R-rated film.
The other films rounding out the weekend’s top three slots are “Get Out” and “The Shack,” with domestic grosses of $28.2 million and $16.2 million respectively.
