MACHIAS, Maine (AP) - A Maine conservation group is looking for volunteers to help monitor the health of fish that run in the state’s rivers.
Fish such as salmon, herring and smelts run in rivers in Maine. Some of the fish, especially salmon, have seen populations drastically reduced over the years because of factors such as pollution, damming and habitat disruption.
The Downeast Salmon Federation says it is looking for trained citizen scientists to go out and count fish and collect data from the streams of Hancock and Washington counties.
The group will host indoor trainings for smelt monitoring volunteers on March 14 in Brooksville and March 22 in East Machias. Training for herring monitors will take place in April.
