JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Ski patrollers have rescued a 28-year-old man who was injured after triggering an avalanche while skiing alone in the backcountry near a Juneau ski area.
The Juneau Empire reports (https://bit.ly/2lLlJuk) the man was taken to a hospital for treatment after the Saturday incident and reported to be in stable condition.
He had been heading down a steep slope outside the Eaglecrest Ski Area when he triggered and got caught in the avalanche.
Eaglecrest snow safety director Brian Davies says patrollers were sent to the area and hiked up the slope one at a time to reach the skier before escorting him down to medical personnel.
Davies says patrollers don’t typically have jurisdiction in the backcountry outside the ski area and have to assess the risk before conducting a rescue mission.
