SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Water officials in North Utah County have agreed to pay the state more than $145,000 for discharging sediment contaminated with heavy metals into the American Fork River.

About 5,200 fish died in a 2 mile stretch of the river in Utah County after the metals-laden mud washed into the waterway on Aug. 22. The sediment was released during work on the Tibble Fork Dam.

In a proposed settlement agreement signed Thursday, the North Utah County Water Conservancy District agreed to pay $52,500 in penalties and nearly $93,000 in reimbursement to the Utah Division of Water Quality.

The district also agreed to monitor the river until it is restored to prerelease conditions.
