PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Officials in Rhode Island say the number of backlogged cases currently pending in the state’s Unified Health Infrastructure Project has grown to nearly 28,000.

WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2nzjvAI ) that out of 27,821 total pending cases, 10,030 require additional documentation from clients and more than 2,000 are duplicate applications.

An aide to the governor says they expect to report significantly lower backlog numbers Friday, once duplicates and errors are removed.

As of mid-January the backlog had been 19,821 cases, with approximately 7,000 requiring additional documentation.

A spreadsheet containing the data was found on the state’s “transparency portal” before it was later removed. The document remains available through the General Assembly website.

State officials say those results are preliminary and the troubled Deloitte-built computer system is still a work in progress.
